Garden-in-a-bag gives the gift of fresh herbs
There's nothing like fresh herbs to perk up virtually any foodstuff, and the Garden-in-a-bag makes it easy to give them instead of cut, already-near-death flowers as a gift. It comes in Basil, Italian Parsley, Good Luck, Lavender, Alpine Strawberry and Mini-Tomato, and to get it going, you just mix the seed and bag contents, add water, and place under a window (or even desk lamp). LightWedge - the energy-efficient reading light
Ooh, I love this idea. The LightWedge is a slim and portable light that sits on your book and illuminates the page. The light is clean and strong to make reading easy, but because it is directed at the book (using a clever tapered lens), it isn't wasteful.
When I get insomnia and like to sit up in bed and read in the middle of the night - I reckon my husband would love me to use one of these, rather than putting on the bedside lamp.
It uses two energy-efficient LEDs, but unfortunately runs off batteries (4 AA size). If I use rechargeables can I still have one? Please?

Say it with (organic) flowers
If red roses are the only way to your loved one's heart this Valentine's Day, then why not surprise them with a bouquet that doesn't contain pesticides, fertilisers or other nasties?
Organic flowers are still quite tricky to find, but ethical store By Nature have teamed up with the recently founded Organic Flower Company to offer a range of organic, fair trade and locally-sourced flowers, just in time for Valentine's. You can pick a bunch like this one for as little as £35 at their website, and to keep romance blooming long after the petals have dropped, every bouquet comes wrapped in paper encrusted with wildflower seeds that can be planted, and attached with a keepsake ladybird peg (aww!)

EPA says Apple is greener than Greenpeace thinks
In a development that should remind everyone that just because an organisation has green aims, we should exercise some critical thinking and not just take their claims as gospel, the US Environmental Protection Agency tells us that Greenpeace have got it all wrong: Apple products are actually amongst the most environmentally-friendly computers out there.
Greenpeace has been doing a bit of publicity-grabbing recently by slagging Apple off for not being very green, getting themselves ejected from Mac Expo for invading other exhibitors' stands and other unreasonable behaviour, and other stunts designed to try to get their message exposed in the reflected light of Apple's media-friendly halo. If that seems like an overly-harsh assessment, let's consider that Apple, whilst not being whiter-than-iPod-white, is not nearly as bad as companies like HP and Dell which haven't been targeted by Greenpeace.
I won't bore you with the details of the EPA's test, because if you're that interested you can read the arstechnica article. Suffice to say that whilst no computer got the gold standard award during the EPA tests, "Apple has the most eco-friendly notebooks, the 4th most eco-friendly desktop, and monitors that [rate better than HP and Dell]." I'm writing this on a MacBook Pro hooked up to an Apple Cinema Display so I'm pleased I'm not as bad as Greenpeace says. (Not that I'd ever be persuaded to switch to a windows PC.)

Beat the January blues with Little Errol
What I need during these dark, rainy days, is a constant, friendly and, above all, cuddly companion. Yes, I know I've got two kids, two cats and a husband, but I feel I need to make an addition to the family... I want a Little Errol.
Although I'm not entirely certain why. Perhaps it is because he is hand-crafted from reclaimed blankets, or perhaps it is his vacant, but somehow ultimately reassuring expression. I think, however, it might be because the current owners (ecocentric) urge me to: "Personalise him, accessorise him and repair him when he wears thin to create a loyal, lifelong companion."

Florame Provençal wooden diffusers
Air fresheners in a can damage the air, and don't so much freshen it as give it a chemical stink that, at best, screws up your ability to enjoy real scents by making your nose confused, and at worst, gives headaches, skin rashes, and more serious disorders to increasing numbers of people who're sensitive to artificial fragrances. However, you don't have to give up the convenience or the aesthetics of perfuming your abode, just the method. Place a Provencal wooden diffuser into a bottle of essential oil in your closet, and the scent will wick up through the wood and diffuse through the ball on top, wafting about the natural aroma. Works especially well in enclosed spots like closets or cars. Use cedar essential oil to ward off moths, mint-lemon to ward off car sickness, or Scots pine as a disinfectant. £7.35 for 10ml of essential oil plus the wooden diffuser. [GT]

The Stupid Gifts Hall of Shame
After Christmas, when the wrapping paper settles, there is often a sense of deflation and regret that, once again, and despite our best intentions, we have spent too much money on too many things that we didn't really need - or want.
Cellophane-wrapped gift sets go into the cupboard for the next time there is a door-to-door charity collection and we vow to make next Christmas different.
There are, however, worse excesses than the smellies-set for Auntie Mabel. Take a look at The Stupid Gifts Hall of Shame if you don't believe me.
The creators of The Hall of Shame point out that too many people waste money on ridiculous gifts, when they could be making the world a better place instead. They are aiming to change the world - one present at a time.
If you've any last-minute shopping left to do, perhaps you'd like to help them?

Solar powered Mars Explorer Kit
While this is not the Luna City nor the jetpack I've been asking Santa to deliver this Christmas, the Solar powered Mars explorer kit gives the illusion of being involved with space travel while actually teaching about how to make the planet we've got work a bit better (since it involves installing a solar panel on top). Given it has over 100 small pieces, Christmas morning amid the debris of (hopefully recycled or otherwise repurposed) wrapping paper may not be the best place to assemble it, but a couple of cups of coffee (with) later you should be up for some quality eco-time (unless you choose to sneak it off to your office and use it to deliver surreptitious notes about your boss's need to control his own gas emissions). A very reasonable £29. [GT]

The Great Ethical Toy Guide
The Independent reports that the Ethical Consumer Research Association publishes their guide to ethical toys this month, in time for Christmas. The guide"marks toy manufacturers on factors as diverse as animal testing, workers' rights, supply chain policy, responsible marketing, product sustainability and contribution to pollution and toxins."
According to the article, a report coming out later this week reckons 25 per cent of shoppers will take into account ethical issues in buying gifts. Of course, there's a leap from considering ethical matters and actually acting upon those considerations but it's a start.
The top five ethical toys as rated by the guide are:
Lanka Kade Toys: Brown girl doll (£9)
Green Board Games: Alpha Animals Family Board Game (£20)
Holz Wooden Toys: Wooden Pirates (£39.50)
Jumping Frog: Zoetrope Moving Image set (£5.11)
George Luck Puzzles: Farm and Field Puzzle (£10.85)
Although it's not on the list, I'd also recommend the miYim organic toy I posted about last week (Annabelle Lamb pictured above).
You can see more details on the guide in the Independent article or you could always subscribe to Ethical Consumer magazine and read that instead. Ethiscore.org also has more comprehensive details online.

Workers exploited in Bangladesh to make cheap clothes for UK
A report by War on Want published today states that cheap clothes sold by Primark, Tesco and Asda may be made by Bangladeshi workers paid as little as 5p for each of the 80 hours they work each week.
That equates to £16 per month, whereas the generally accepted monthly living wage in Bangladesh, according to War on Want, is £22. The starting wages in some factories was found to be as low as £8 per month by War on Want's researchers.
The retailers involved have made public commitments to paying a fair living wage to suppliers, who also must not be required to work more than an average 48 hours per week. They've countered the findings in the report by denying the allegations and pointing out their low prices were a result of an efficient supply chain, while pointing out the role of factory audits to maintain standards.
War on Want's report is available in full in pdf format from their website.
