Ugandan bark cloth and recycled paper journals

Barkclothjournals_tree_lizard_370x237_80

Bark cloth was once just used for clothes, but is now made into placemats, book covers and purses, for export.  The bark comes from fig trees, which, like cork, can be stripped every so often without harm to the tree.  The outer dark fibers are stripped off and the inner, light fibers are beaten until they behave.  (So to speak.)  The bark cloth journals shown here are embroidered with sisal and filled with recycled paper sheets.  4x6 journals are $18 USD and photo album sized books are $24.  [GT
