Redwood fortified vegan mince

Redwood_vegan

For National Vegetarian Week (now until May 28; have a brussels sprout on me, chilluns) Redwood Foods is launching new, meat-free Vegideli Cheatin’ Vegetarian Mince, fortified with Omega 3 and 6 (from flax), vitamins B6 and B12, and "inulin (from chicory), a pre-biotic that stimulates the growth of healthy intestinal bacteria."  Approved by the Vegetarian Society and registered by the Vegan Society.  So it must be good.  Right?

The tricky part about compounding foods together is that it makes them even more inaccessible to people who are trying to have a straightforward diet, or those (like me) who have a lot of food intolerances and would otherwise be a customer if it wasn't for that chicory makes us dizzy and nauseated.  I'm a big fan of simple.  It keeps my tummy working.  While chicory is generally a good idea because it is obscure, and unlikely to be an issue for most, it does bring to mind the general issue of what happens when a certain food becomes too widespread.  I'm referring to corn, of course, but I'd hate to see the same thing happen to flax.  But these issues notwithstanding, I'm sure the food itself is enviable - even PETA said their Vegideli Cheatin’ Chicken-style Pieces (£2.10 for 150g) tasted, er, like chicken. Actually they said it was way better than chicken. [GT]
