High tech composting
The Nature Mill is a composting appliance. Sealed and odorless, it sits in your kitchen, keeping your pile at a constant temperature and humidity. When the fertilizer is ready, a light goes on, you slide out a tray, and dump it in your garden. Surprisingly little muss and fuss considering what you're dealing with - no worms, no drips, no smells. No more remembering to rotate your compost. Since it stays hot enough to sterilize everything, you don't even have to worry about separating out fish, meat and dairy.
The Nature Mill draws 10 watts of power - meaning you could power it off ten bucks worth of homemade solar panels - and, used regularly, would divert two tons of high-methane waste from landfills over its lifespan. At $400 it costs around the same as your average trash compactor, and given the choice between the two I'd plump for this one. (No UK distributor yet though, and probably far too heavy to realistically ship.)

This machine was a disaster. The horrible smell permeated my entire home, resulting in my having to move the machine to the garage. It leaked a nasty brownish black goo all over my kitchen floor. Customer service was terrible, and although I ultimately got my money back, the company was difficult to deal with and it took me several months of fighting. Don't buy it!
