Find your nearest farmer's market
Whatever way you look at it, farmer's markets are better than supermarkets: the food almost always tastes better, costs less and gives the grower a higher cut of your pennies. Yes, they're not as convenient as a supermarket and, yes, sometimes they're a pain to get to. But a freshly plucked apple grown 40 miles away versus a flavourless one flown 11,000-odd miels from New Zealand? No contest. Find your nearest market here or - if you live in London - here. As I've learned from Leo Hickman's A Good Life, May's a bit lean for British seasonal food, but you can stil pick up the last dregs of winter spinach and the first tips of summer asparagus. There's a third site which is useful for finding your local farm market: farmshopping.

It seems to know of more places, at least near me!
